Buying & Selling

Characters will often need to buy and sell from merchants. Below are rules to know available items, what can be sold, and how much.

Used by: the Basic Game Loop, when a character buys or sells in a settlement.
Uses: Magic Items: Buy, Sell, Craft, Research, Gems, Monster Parts.
Goes back to: the calling procedure.
Records to update: character sheets; settlement notes, faction notes.

Buying & Item Availability

Village merchants have items worth 50 gp or less; town merchants 500 gp or less. Items of all kinds can be found in cities. For items worth 5 gp or less, typically up to 100 of each are available per week. For items worth more, 5 are available per week at a village, 10 at a town, and 15 in a city.

Selling Treasure

Treasure type Where to sell For how much

Gems Any settlement Listed value (see Gems)

Sell limits

Settlements do not always have enough coin to buy whatever characters want to sell. A village can buy up to 500 gp per week; a town up to 2,000 gp. Cities can buy up to 10,000 gp per week. Reaching these limits is likely to create rumors.

Fences

A fence is a buyer with ties to black markets, smugglers, and thieves' guilds. Fences trade items that legitimate merchants will not, but are always looking for ways to make fast money. Fences can often buy items immediately, but at a large discount of 25% or more. Fences may reduce discounts with repeated business and good relationships.
