Monster Parts¶
A slain creature is worth more than the coins it carries. Claws, glands, hearts, and stranger organs hold the essences that magic draws upon and are the exotic materials that every act of magical crafting requires.
Grade, Value, & Match¶
A part's grade is the challenge rating of the creature it came from, which sets the rarity of item it can help craft. A monster part can often be sold in cities.
| Item rarity | Creature CR | Approximate Value |
|---|---|---|
| Common | 1–3 | 20 gp |
| Uncommon | 4–8 | 100 gp |
| Rare | 9–12 | 400 gp |
| Very rare | 13–18 | 2,500 gp |
| Legendary | 19+ | 10,000 gp |
A part must suit the craft: a fire creature's heart for a fire spell, a giant bat's wing for a cloak, an elemental's core for a magical staff.
Harvesting¶
A part is taken from a creature with skill check with a DC equal to 12 plus half the CR of the creature, rounding up. The check is Nature or Survival for creatures of flesh, Arcana for the inherently magical. If successful, the part is cleanly drawn and cured and keeps indefinitely. Otherwise, the part is spoiled and worthless.
A creature yields one part, plus one more per size category above Medium (Large 2, Huge 3, Gargantuan 4) or more based on the DM's discretion.
The time taken to harvest a part depends on the part, creature size, and available tools and ranges from minutes to several hours or even a workweek.
Size & Weight¶
A monster part weight depends on the part and the creature's size. The table below gives approximate weights.
| Creature size | Weight per part |
|---|---|
| Tiny | 1 lb or less |
| Small | 2 lb |
| Medium | 5 lb |
| Large | 25 lb |
| Huge | 100 lb |
| Gargantuan | 500+ lb |
Some parts weigh far less (a whisker) and some far more (a full hide). Large parts or those from creatures larger than Medium are often bulky.
