Communication and Posting

Communication between game world characters and availability of information about game world events is critical for players to make informed play decisions.

SEEN Posts

Serious events, evidence, and narratives within the game world are crucial to record and make public for all players. A SEEN post is a public account of a serious event, such as an order, a project, an expedition, or other notable happening. The player of the character most involved in such an event must write this post.

The purpose of the post is to make the event public for all players, to add to the recorded history of the game world, and to spur other players to engage. Players often prefer that their actions stay secret, but the post is required. If it wasn't SEEN, it didn't happen. To help all players to stay informed of the goings on in the game world, a post may be required at the outset of an event, at its completion, or multiple times as it unfolds.

The DM may allow a post to be vague or only reveal some information, but otherwise the player must include all relevant information.

Writing the post

Routine events (mustering, construction progress) may warrant only a headline post, which can be short and to the point. Events with more narrative stakes will benefit from a more lengthy post.

In any case, a post is a player's opportunity to shape perception of events and influence other players. Not only are events and evidence given in the post, but narratives can and should be created. A post does not have to be a mere recounting; it can create suspicion and curiosity.

With the post body, include a title and a header noting where the event took place, such as settlement name and hex number (e.g. Rumors from the town of Elderfort at 12.34). Once finished, send it to the DM. The DM publishes it in a forum for public news and rumors such that the author remains anonymous.

Players may send posts to the DM at any time. Public posts are the primary way to spread information across the game world, whether truth, lies, sourced, or anonymous. Besides SEEN posts, players are encouraged to post advertisements, rumors, challenges, requests for aid, and even misinformation.

PC-to-PC Communication

PCs may communicate with each other only through in-world means: being near enough to speak, sending letters, or using magical means (e.g. message or sending stones). Players must not use direct messages or any out-of-game channel to conduct PC-to-PC conversation.

Sending letters

To send a message from one PC to another, send a message to the DM using this template:

TO: (recipient's name)
FROM: (sender's name, which may be falsified)
METHOD: (letter, sending, sending stones, etc.)
COPY: (the exact text to be given to the recipient;
    include any indication of who the sender is or appears to be;
    respect method limits such as 25 words for sending)

The DM passes the message along to the recipient.

Example

TO: Bart
FROM: Gruff
METHOD: letter
COPY:
<inside is a rolled parchment with a wax seal>

Dear Friend,

I am writing to inform you that I will be marching an army to your castle to join forces in the attack against our common enemy.

Sincerely,
Gruff
