Description¶
Merchants, clerks, artisans, minor functionaries, harbor and toll masters, guildhouse officers, the master of a caravan wagon team, the keeper of a small shop with a strongbox. Not a soldier, not a laborer. Trained in a trade and skilled in what that trade demands. Carries a shortsword under his cloak in dangerous districts; will use it to defend his stock or his ledger if the Watch is slow.
Composes into any of the civic and commercial roles across the Rulers, Traders, Faithful, and other axes where a settled townsman with real skill but no martial background is called for.
Design notes¶
- Sits between the SRD Commoner (CR 0, 4 HP, all 10s) and the SRD Noble (CR 1/8, 9 HP, better stats). The Professional is more skilled than a Commoner and mentally sharper, but not born or trained to fight.
- Mental stats (Int, Wis, Cha) are all 13 to reflect an educated tradesman; physical stats are ordinary.
- Hit Points at 11 (2d8+2) give him a moment to yield, flee, or call for the Watch rather than dropping to a lucky strike.
- The Shortsword replaces the Commoner's club as his default weapon: light, worn under a cloak, socially acceptable in a market town.
- Professional Training keeps the stat block short — the DM picks the three skills or tools appropriate to the role rather than tracking a fixed skill list.
- Original stat block; not copied from any WotC supplement.
